Here’s a few tips to help you pick out a Surf Fishing Rod. Surf Rods are unique in their design characteristics to be used for fishing in surf. These tips will help you make an intelligent choice when selecting your first or next surf rod.

Design features to consider are:

Rod Length
Rod Taper
Rated Rod Power
Type, Quantity and Location of Rod Guides
Reel Seats

Rod Length

Fishing the surf requires the ability to cast long distances using surf casting techniques. To be able to cast as far as possible surf rods are long. A good length for a surf rod is 10′ to 12′. Rods that are shorter will sacrifice casting distance and rods that are longer will be more difficult to cast.

Rod Taper

Fishing rods are designed for different types of fishing. Some rods require a fast action and others a medium or slow action. This is accomplished through the design incorporated into the rod taper. Rods with a fast action will bend from the upper third of the rod length. A slow action design bends from the lower third. When a rod is designed for the surf it should have a medium action which bends from the upper middle half of the rod.

Rated Rod Power

The power rating of any fishing rod is refereed to as it’s backbone. This is the fish fighting strength of the rod. Surf fish can be very powerful but you don’t want a rod that has too much backbone because you will sacrifice casting distance. The best compromise is to choose a surf rod with a medium heavy power rating.

Rod Guides

Materials used for rod guides vary. Top quality rods will be fitted with silicon carbide guides. These are considered to be the best guides because they are very hard, resist wear and are very smooth which improves casting distance. The next best choice is ceramic guides. Ceramic guides are not as hard as silicon carbide but are still a good material for guides . There are a few different kinds of ceramic used for guides some are harder than others. It is not possible to determine the quality of the ceramic by inspection. Don’t be too concerned about the quality of the ceramic when choosing a surf rod.

Besides the guide material consider the quantity of guides. Generally speaking more guides are desirable because they spread the load over the length of the rod more uniformly. Since a surf rod design bends from the upper third the number of guides and spacingĀ  along that section are important. Bend the rod at the tip to see the arc it makes under a load. Pay attention to the shape of the arc and the location of the guides. The guides should be located at the transition points of the arc.

Due to stress on the main line when casting surf casters use a shock leader tied to the main line. The rod guides can hinder the casting distance if they are not large enough to allow the shock leader knot to pass through during the cast. Make sure that the guides at the tip of the rod are not too restrictive.

Reel Seats

The final component of a surf rod that I want to cover is the reel seats. Reels seats are made from different metal alloys or graphite. The surf environment is very corrosive. Reel seats should be made from a non corrosive metal such as stainless steel or other rust proof alloy. Graphite reel seats are not recommended for surf rods.

Use these tips to help you select a good surf rod. With this information it should be easy to for you to make a good decision.

There is always something to do around the house, and never enough time to do it. Sometimes the faucets need fixing, sometimes the lawn needs mowing. Either the beds have to be done, or it is time to air the cupboards. And we haven’t even begun.

Instead of taking things as they come, it might be better to tackle them head-on. And the best way to do that is by having a household calendar. A household calendar is a simple breakdown of all the things that need to be done for the house, broken down over 52 weeks.

At the start of the year, assign each activity to a particular week, and then follow the calendar religiously. For example, January may consist of changing all the bed sheets, maintenance on faucets, cleaning out the garage and waxing the car. February may consist of an entirely different set of activities – although you may want to consider repeating some activities through the year.

The advantages of such a system are obvious.

1) A regular schedule

If things are given regular care and attention, they are that much more likely to last longer. Cleaner household equipment, clean and clear-of-dust corners and fresh drapes and linens make a house look that much more attractive, and this is much easier to do with a regular cleaning schedule.

2) Assigning responsibilities

Along with a schedule, it doesn’t take too much effort to assign responsibilities. If this is done at the very beginning of the year, every member of the family knows just what is expected of him or her, and what time of the year.

3) A one-time exercise

The same calendar can of course be used year after year – and what seemed like a bothersome chore at the time can save you time and effort for many years to come.

It may take some convincing for your family to get used to the system, and there may even be the odd murmur of discontent. But once you get them used to the system, you’ll find everybody helping you turn your house into a home – year after year!

Fishing is a great hobby, giving you the chance to be out in the fresh air and sunshine while you’re relaxing. You can get far away from the hustle and bustle of daily life, and be at one with nature.

Like most hobbies, fishing requires some basic equipment. Fishing tackle is the gear you use to get artificial or live bait in front of a fish. You don’t need much tackle to get started in fishing, but it’s important to get the basics right. You can always add more tackle once your skill level improves, and you’re ready to use more advanced tackle.

Rod and Reel

This is probably the most important piece of tackle. It’s good to start off with a lightweight rod and spinner reel, because they’re easier to handle and make it simpler to tell when you’ve had a bite. Quite often you can purchase this as one unit. If you’re just thinking about taking up fishing, borrow one from a friend to try it out. A fishing rod suitable for an adult is usually 6 feet long, and a child’s rod 4 to 5 feet long.

Fishing Line

Fishing line is also called filament, and you can buy it in a variety of sizes or strengths. The strength is measured in a unit called pound-test, and the higher the pound-test number, the stronger the fishing line. It’s important to choose line that matches your rod and reel, the bait you use and the fish you’re planning to catch. If you’ve got a small, lightweight rod, and use spin casting or a spinning reel, you only need line up to 6 pound-test. The most popular line is in the 8 to 16 pound-test range. It’s important not to use too heavy a line, though, because it becomes more visible to the fish. Most basic equipment and kids’ rods are best used with 8 pound-test fishing line.

Bait

Bait can be either live or artificial, and there are plenty of varieties. You can always use the old favorite from the garden, earthworms, particularly if you have an active compost heap. If you don’t have your own worms, you can buy them, or else use mealworms, grubs, kernel corn or bread balls.

Floats

Floats, or bobbers, are attached to the fishing line, and sit on the water surface. When the float dips into the water, you know a fish has taken a bite. It’s best to use small floats, with just enough weight to stop the bait dragging it under the water. Pencil shaped bobbers are the most sensitive, but you can also use a round bobber which is generally easier to cast. Slip bobbers are easy to adjust and use, and are great for beginners and children.

Hooks

You can buy fishhooks in a large range of sizes and styles. If you’re going to use live bait, you’ll probably find it easiest to buy a variety pack, so that you get a range of hooks from size No. 6 to No. 10. If you’re after bigger fish, get larger hooks. For catch and release fishing, you need to flatten the barbs on your fishhook, to minimize damage to the inside of the fish’s mouth. As a general rule of thumb, work out what type of fish you’re planning to catch and use a hook that’s compatible with the size of the fish’s mouth. If it’s too small, the fish will swallow the hook, and if it’s too big, the fish won’t take the bait.

Sinkers or Weights

You need these to stop your line from floating on the surface of the water. You can get everything from split shot sinkers that range from tiny through to pencil size, right up to sinkers that weight a pound or more. For beginners and children, use split shot. Make sure they’re lead free to protect the environment.

Other Gear

Fishing net. Not essential, but can be handy when landing a fish, and they’re good for keeping the kids amused!

Leaders. You hook these on to your line and use the small pin catch to slip on hooks or lures. Probably better for more experienced anglers or large fish.Swivels. This is another type of pin clip you can use to prevent your line from tangling as it moves through the water.

Fishing Knife. Very handy if you have a snagged or tangled line, as well as for cleaning and scaling fish. Give kids nail clippers rather than a knife to cut their line.Needle Nose Pliers. You can use these to remove fishhooks. First Aid Kit. Make sure it includes bandages, peroxide and anti-bacterial ointment for cuts and scrapes.Tackle Box. With all the bits and pieces you’ll rapidly accumulate, a tackle box can be a great way of organizing and storing everything.

Now that you have everything you need, it’s time for the best part – going fishing! Head off for a nice shady spot on the bank of a stream, relax, and wait for a fish to nibble on the bait.

We all have used lead weights of different shapes and sizes and yet many Sea Anglers don’t know the proper use for them, they just grab any old weight out of the tackle box and sling it out. This is a big mistake as you are not increasing your chances of catching. In this article I will go through some basic leads and their uses and also ways to improve your catch rate!

The Designs

Starting with the basic “Beach Bomb Lead” or known as a Pear Lead. This fishing weight is used by a lot of anglers it’s fairly aerodynamic and has smooth sides and has multiple uses. Most common use is for sticking on the end of a set of feathers in the summer! This style also has the great advantage of not holding ground or gripping. When bottom fishing with a basic ledger rig from a pier or beach this lead can be one of the best leads for covering ground. Covering ground by means of not having static bait pinned to the sea bed whilst you wait for the fish to pass! By allowing your bait to move along the sea bead it will drop into gully’s or sand formations that you can’t see, this is where fish hold tight too, normally because its where food deposits and easy snacks end up due to the currents or underwater features.

The classic Grip Lead is the complete opposite to a beach bomb because it comes with grip wires which dig into the sea bed. There are a few variations of the “Grip Lead” you have Standard, Long Tail, Short Tail, Long Wire, Softy and Breakout but they all do the same job. These are great when you want to hold ground especially when there is a strong tide and you want to pin your bait down next to a feature or stop your rig getting dragged into a snag! A good size for a grip lead would be 3-4oz however when I went on a fishing week in the Isle of Scilly even a 7oz+ lead won’t hold the bottom there due to vast amounts of water pushing through the islands, so remember to take a good selection of weights with you, especially if you have never fished the venue before.

Watch Lead or Clock Leads. It’s the lead weight you get with a crab line when you were a child, yes they are used for crab lines however they are fantastic leads for anglers that like to target Flatfish. For Estuary fishing and Beach fishing this lead is a good choice to use as it is a fairly flat lead and partially grips the sea bed with its lead bumps. The bumps provide just enough resistance to guide your rig on the bottom but also to stir up the sandy seabed attracting curious bottom dwelling fish. With this lead design you will have more control than the Beach Bomb method however it won’t cover the ground as quickly which can be an advantage and a disadvantage depending on your methods. Also there are leads that are very close to the watch leads in their uses. These are the Breakaway Flattie Leads with built in Impact Bait Clips, Coffin Leads and Star Leads which look like a medieval club.

Egg Leads, Bullet Leads, Ball Leads! Most anglers refer to them as Float Leads; it’s a simple weight with a drilled center, they can be used as said before with Sea Floats but also they are very handy for extra weight when lure fishing by placing them behind a trace line or they can be used for basic ledgering for Wrasse when you just need that little extra weight. I always have a selection of egg leads ranging from 1-3oz which covers most needs when I’m out fishing new marks “very handy”. The great advantage with these is they are probably the cheapest lead weight on the market so if you lose some it’s not a problem!

Thinking outside the lead box!

Here are some useful tips for lead weights that I have picked up over the years and recently.

Paint the leads

That’s right paint the leads a colour of your choice with a can of spray! Some angler’s recon that painting the lead acts like an attractor or lure which they believe helps the fish locate the bait. A method that is defiantly worth trying out.

Soft baits at range

There is a lead design which some of you may have already used or have heard of, it’s the new “Dvice”, a hook bait delivery capsule with the lead built in. This is becoming a popular choice for anglers around the UK. We sell them here at Monster Fishing under Rig Components or the Lead Weight Section.

Dipping

Some anglers dip there lead weights in Rag worm or Lug worm oils that you can get on the market as a attractant and then place the weights in the freezer, they repeat the process until they have built up two or three layers of frozen oil around the lead. Bit like dipping a candle. Then they place their lead weights into a thermos flask to take to the venue. The idea is that when the lead is cast out with your rig attached of course, the oil defrosts under your rig thus releasing the oily scent trail which fish lock onto to locate your bait quicker. Maybe worth a try!

Conclusion

Next time you walk into you tackle shop or purchase tackle online, take the time to think about what lead weights you really need and how they could improve your chances. Yes there are no hard and fast rules about choosing leads but each lead weight design has its own special features which can be tailored into your individual fishing style and needs.

For the first 15 or so years of my fishing career I really had no idea why fish bite. I stuck with the old standby rule of when to fish, the mornings and evenings. The best times to go fishing for me were whenever I could. Then I began to realize that there was more of a science to fish biting. I started to study how different factors caused fish to bite. I then began to figure out when to fish.

Fishing shouldn’t be a random act. There are certain simple things that can be studied and used to your advantage as an angler to determine the best times to go fishing. After reading this article you will have a much better idea of when to fish, and when you may just want to stay home and read a book or organize your fishing vest/tackle box. These things aren’t rocket science either; they are simple, easy to use techniques that will simply help you catch more fish.

The first thing to consider in regards to when to fish is the weather. The weather has an incredible impact on the best time to go fishing. You see, the reason the weather changes is because fronts pass through the area, and when fronts pass through areas the air pressure changes. Fish can detect these pressure changes through their lateral lines, and bite or don’t bite based on what they feel. If you know how these pressure changes affect fish and their feeding habits it will aide you tremendously in determining when to fish.

The next thing to consider in regards to when to fish is the moon. The moon also has an amazing impact on the best time to be fishing. Were you aware of the fact that fish feed much more heavily during certain phases of the moon? Just being on the water when the moon is full (for example) will increase your catch rate dramatically. When it comes to figuring out when to fish the moon is a major factor. Pay attention to what phase the moon is in and plan your fishing trips accordingly.

The actual best time to go fishing is impossible to determine, however you can tip the odds into your favor by following the simple steps in this article. The next time someone asks you if you know when to fish, think about these factors of Mother Nature and your advice will be much more valid. It’s not necessary to become an astronomer or meteorologist either. The basics will do just fine.

Trout fishing is very popular, and because it is so popular, anglers have a wide variety of baits to choose from. Trout are considered an egg fish when it comes to their diet, however, they do eat more than just eggs. They eat flies, worms, insects and minnows. Many people don’t know this, but they are also a predator fish. They will stalk and hunt their prey. They are not ambush predators like largemouth bass. All these things need to be considered when choosing your bait.

When it comes to trout bait, it’s hard to beat “Berkley” products. “Berkley Gulp Trout Dough,” is one of the hottest baits out right now. It has a scent that trout just can not pass up. It’s long lasting and very easy to use. You just form it to your hook, and let the bait do the work. Berkley also makes “Power Bait,” this is another dough bait that comes in many different colors and scents. You will want to pick up a few different flavors, as I have learned, that the same color and flavor that worked last year may not be what’s working this year. And this can change during the course of a year (and I’m talking about the same lake) you just have to experiment with the different flavors.

Remember how trout are an egg fish? Well salmon eggs are a must have in the tackle box if you’re fishing for trout. Salmon eggs come in a variety of flavors, they even have cheese salmon eggs, but I have had the most success with, balls O’ fire, made by the Pautzke Bait Co. These are the plain red salmon eggs and it doesn’t even say if they are scented. But in my opinion, they are the most natural looking of the salmon eggs and you can’t argue with success.

Berkley also makes a bait they call,”Trout Power Nuggets,” this is a floating dough designed to be fished on the top of the water. It mimics the hatchery that many trout are raised on. It not only mimics the hatchery in appearance but also in scent. This is a great bait for trout, as is all the baits I’ve mentioned. Trust me, you can’t go wrong with these baits, just don’t forget to experiment.

Plano Large 6-Tray Tackle Box Review

I just purchased this 6 tray plano tackle box about a month ago. I have a lot of fishing gear that needs to come with me in the boat. This is a BIG tackle box that might not be what you want to haul around on the banks of a lake or river, but is a necessity when you have a boat to take out. This tackle box has a TON of slots for big crank baits and comes with extra dividers if you want to make more smaller slots. Also has a large bottom which holds anything from pliers to bottom bouncers to extra, bagged up spinners or lindy rig setups. This seems to be built pretty well with a big, strong handle to support a lot of weight. All of my fold out trays seem to be very stable and built strong. As long as I give this tackle box a little respect I think it will last a LONG TIME.

There was a time when I would catch a nice fish, and once landing it, I would have to rifle through my fishing vest like a coked up mail sorter to find my tape measure. This was an extreme pain in the butt. The exact same thing would happen when I was fishing with my tackle box, and I would catch a large fish. Then I had to find, open, and search through my tackle box to find the tape measure.

This truly was a problem that I assumed I simply had to deal with and forget about. Then one day my fishing partner and I were talking about common problems such as this, and after brainstorming for a couple of days, we came up with a solution to the problem of keeping track of your tape measure while fishing. We said to ourselves; There has to be an easier way to keep track of your measuring device while fishing?

Then it hit us. Why not have your measuring device on your fishing rod, because you’ve always got your fishing rod with you when you’re fishing. This only makes sense, right? We sure thought it did, so we made some for our fishing rods, to see how they worked. They worked great, and now we’re never fishing without having our measuring device on our fishing rod, rather than somewhere else.

At first, our “rod rulers” didn’t last long. They would get wet and come off. Then we stumbled on the idea of making them on the same material that boat stickers are made out of. This was the ticket to making a “rod ruler” that stuck and lasted for a very long time. So that’s what happened. We made our new measuring devices out of the same material that boat stickers are made out of, and voila!

Now measuring our fish has never been easier. I personally have this type of measuring device on every one of my fishing rods. With the exception of my ice fishing rods (they are so small, it’s just doesn’t make sense). The bottom line is that after our days of brainstorming, we solved the problem of figuring out where your tape measure is. And the funny thing is that the solution was as simple as the problem, who would have imagined such a thing?
